Kate Smurthwaite brought my attention to the new Police advertising campaign telling women this Christmas to have fun, but not too much fun, or else they’ll get raped. The West Midlands Police seem to have managed to make an awful campaign even worse, with the sort of patronising design you find in awareness posters aimed at school children. The font is disconcertingly close to Comic Sans, the colours are reminiscent of sweet wrappers, and you half expect a warning about the dangers of putting sparklers in your mouth. It’s a series of warnings akin to the Green Cross Code. Look left, look right, look left again, or you’ll get run over. Only here it’s watch your drink, stay in a group, book a taxi, or you’ll get raped. The difference being that the conviction rate for death by dangerous driving is 85.1%, whereas for rape it’s 5.3%.

Patronising women is obviously the only way to prevent rape. *facepalm*

It’s just not on is it? They should be prosecuting properly, and policing the areas rather than making us make all the effort! I don’t think I should have to pay for a taxi and not enjoy my time just because some people don’t know how to behave properly in the real world. If the police are that convinced I need to get a taxi home, I’d like to see them pay for it, perhaps make sure taxis are available to all, or start up their own taxi service for vulnerable people. It shouldn’t have to be my job.

Professor David Nutt, the Government’s chief drug adviser, was sacked today after claiming ecstasy and LSD were less dangerous than alcohol, Home Office sources said.

Prof. Nutt, chairman of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, attacked the decision to make cannabis a class B drug.
